About Ziaul Hasan Siddiqui
He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Dhaka and a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) from Harvard University. Ziaul is also a certified professional with diplomas in banking and training assessment.
Ziaul’s career spans senior leadership roles including Chairman of Sonali Bank Ltd. and Sonali Pay UK Ltd., where he oversaw governance and strategic financial decisions. He has also served as CEO of the IGW Operators Forum, Advisor to Prime Bank, and Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Bangladesh.
As Deputy Governor, Ziaul was in charge of multiple key departments, including Monetary Policy, Foreign Exchange and International Division, Payments Systems, IT, and Research and Statistics. Additionally, he served as the Chief of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) and was the Member Secretary of the National Coordination Committee on Anti-Money Laundering (AML) & Countering the Financing of Terrorism (CFT).
He played a critical role in the creation of Bangladesh’s first mobile payment system, guided the country out of the FATF watchlist, and developed key financial policies to strengthen the financial sector. His contributions to international regulatory compliance, such as formulating AML & CFT policies and facilitating financial information exchange, have had a lasting impact on the sector.
Ziaul is also an academic leader, teaching economics at institutions like Australian Catholic University, BRAC University and the International University of Business and Technology. He is a member of the Bangladesh Economic Association and the Institute of Bankers Bangladesh, continuing to shape both the academic and financial sectors.
